ABSTRACT: Ecologists frequently associate environmental and biotic filtering as determinants of community assembly from a regional species pool. In recent years, new evidences have highlighted the role of phylogenetic history as an intrinsic influence on the community response to environmental variability. This poses a challenge because the assembly of communities is embedded in a spatio-temporal context where dispersal capabilities and biotic interactions may determine species niches, especially in isolated oceanic islands. Here, we explore how reef fish abundances from four oceanic islands in the southwestern Atlantic respond to the environment considering their phylogenetic history, functional traits and species co-occurrences. We approached the problem by modeling species response to environmental variation using a multivariate hierarchical generalized linear mixed model (HMSC - Hierarchical Modelling of Species Communities), that allows the inclusion of spatio-temporal random effects, fitted with Bayesian inference. Based on a posterior probability > 0.9, we found a strong phylogenetic signal (0.98, maximum possible value being 1) and a relatively low proportion of variance in abundances explained by functional traits, varying from 29.55% for spring to 33.24% for summer. The most important environmental covariate is chlorophyll- a concentration, explaining up to 22.8% of abundance variance. This can be explained by the mass effect of the interaction of the flow with the topography of the islands that increases the concentration of chlorophyll in their surroundings. The global spatial and temporal effects on abundances are also low, with a maximum of 17.9% for sampling sites in spring. Our study offers a synthesis of how phylogenies and functional traits of reef fishes relate to species niches in isolated oceanic islands, gaining new insights into how assembly processes have shaped these communities. |
